Winter NJ Moving
While you might try to plan their move between May and September, things don’t always go as planned, and you might have to move during the winter. Or perhaps you want to move during the winter to avoid competition for housing and hiring moving companies. Whatever your reason, moving during the winter season presents a variety of challenges.
If you want to get ahead of any potential issues, your best bet is to work with NJ Great Movers. We’ve helped our customers relocate regardless of the weather situation. Of course, we’ll keep you updated on potential storm fronts and let you know if we need to reschedule. With that said, we’ve hardly ever had to change the moving day due to inclement weather, so you’ll be in good hands.

Prepare for Your Winter Move
Winter tends to be the least popular time of the year to move due to the cold temperatures and bad weather. After all, it’s no fun moving your belongings through snow and rain. If you’re planning a winter move, make sure to follow the steps below to make your life easier:
- Keep an eye on the weather – while we’ll be looking at the weather forecast to make sure we allot enough time to get to your home you should make sure you plan for what’s ahead, as you’ll also need to drive to your new home.
- Clear the driveway and walkways – to make it easier for the movers and yourself, take the time to clear any areas where you know you and the movers will be walking on snow. It’ll make the move much faster.
- Dress for the weather – chances are it’s going to be cold on moving day. Make sure you’re dressed appropriately! Remember that the doors to your house will be opened and closed multiple times, so you won’t be able to keep the heat indoors.
- Add extra protection to walls and floors – All movers will bring their own supplies, but you have to be extra cautious of tracking in sludge, snow, ice, and mud into your old and new houses. Add some extra plastic runners or even some newspapers to avoid making a mess.

Why Make a Winter Move
There are a lot of negatives when it comes to moving in the winter. You have to deal with cold weather, snow, mud, bad roads, and potential blizzards. All of that leads to more cleanup, soggy boxes, and just a general feeling of exhaustion. However, plenty of people prefer moving in the winter because it has several advantages:
- Less competition – fewer people move in the wintertime. While that might mean less inventory when it comes to houses, it also means there are less people competing for both houses and professional movers
- More room for negotiation – It takes longer to sell a house during the winter months so you definitely have more opportunities to bring the asking price down. Similarly, professional movers are more willing to provide deals for their services
- Less traffic – while you’ll still have to deal with some traffic, less people are on the road during the winter months than during the summer.
- Cooler temperatures – Not every day is snowy in the winter. In fact, there are plenty of sunny days, and the cooler temperatures mean you don’t have to worry as much about overheating or dehydration
